Day 4 - Wednesday, April 20th 2016

After a luxurious night's sleep at The Randolf, we enjoyed another wonderful English breakfast before heading out in the brisk morning air to go see the Bodleian Library.  After exploring a bit more, everyone was given the opportunity to purchase an Oxford sweatshirt because "we went to Oxford!" ;)

This room was used as the hospital in the Harry Potter movies with this door being particular in the movies as well

For lunch we went to the Eagle and Child restaurant which was the very spot J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis would meet weekly to write, discuss and compare notes.  We sat in groups, used props, and discussed a devotional we had each read and highlighted throughout, that was written by C.S. Lewis. Our own academic discussions like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis had done in their day, compared our own notes about the truth of the "New Heaven" when this sinful world has passed away.

We basically took up the entire back half of this quaint and popular little place

In depth discussions of a convicting devotional that may have been written in this very room, was a highlight of this trip.

For lunch, many of us ordered the Ultimate Burger... and the name of it was no joke.  It was a feat to try and eat without having to disassemble at least some of it!  It was delicious though!

They weren't kidding!

Good Luck, Daniel!

Rubbing shoulders with some of the smartest people, bustling about these streets, you can't help but feel as though some of the intelligence has rubbed off on you. We next ventured out to a real palace called Blenheim (the last Cinderella movie was filmed there). A family currently resides as true Duke and Duchess over these lands. If we so desired to venture through all of their grounds, we would need four days to accomplish this task. For today, we took in a tour of the actual palace (that looks like a castle), followed by a train ride towards the spirited, speed race through an eight-foot high, hedge maze. Much fun and madness ensued.

Just the center section of Blenheim Palace!  It wouldn't all fit in one photo!

Again, God's face has shone brightly upon us, literally, as the weather is perfect! What an incredible blessing when we are exploring grounds during this spring season outdoors.
We boarded the bus and headed out to the city of Bath. The city is known for it's Roman-built bath and hot springs (which we will see tomorrow) but for tonight, we checked into the Bath Hilton and headed out for a nice dinner at Jamie's Italian. The restaurant is owned by Jamie Oliver, the British chef, known for his cooking shows on Food Network.  It did not disappoint!

Huge trays of appetizers awaited our arrival so we could feed our hungry bellies right away

The post-sunset, gorgeous view outside the back patio of this 2 story restaurant took many of us outside to get a few photos

Day 3 - Tuesday, April 19th 2016

Day three of being in England,  we walk to the church we viewed from the boat. On our way to arriving, we have a circle devotion praising God through His word and Psalms. We discuss the false worshiping of a person like Shakespeare, and spend our time placing the one true God as the ultimate King of our complete admiration and devotion. It was beautiful as He shined down on us through the tall trees still sprouting from this ancient land.

Our next venture landed us in that lusciously green countryside where the 43 of us walked four miles. This is a highlight to experience an English hike. We've been observing from our coach windows, this wondrous land, and now we are actually able to engage with it. Our first greeters are baby goats no bigger than your forearm and horses looking for apple treats. The  green pastures meandering from field to field, bend us around ways that offer up daffodils, white and yellow,  baby daisies, and more babbling brooks. This is a time when the conversations ebbs and flows as easily as the streams offer plenty of water.

After this adventure, we move to the area of Cotswold where Bourton-on-the-Water exists. This little town reminds you of an English Solvang, yet of course, the difference is the gentle water that can be crossed by several footpath bridges. Many people sit on benches and eat ice cream along these waters while the ducks come looking for their own treats. This is a pit-stop until we reach Oxford, home to one of the most prominent universities in the world.

After enjoying a little time in this sweet village, we headed through some more beautiful countryside to Oxford.  As soon as we arrived, we divided into two groups for a tour of Magdalan College as well as other parts of the college and city. Our tour guides were lovely ladies who gave us a wealth of information and history about Oxford, as we walked briskly around these beautiful buildings.

This is the motto and arms of the University meaning "The Lord is my light". It has been used since the 16th century.

The oldest building of Oxford University, built in 1040. The coffee cart however, was a more recent addition =)

Our scenic journeys of the day made us good and hungry for dinner.  Our tour in Oxford ended up putting us right at Castle Pizza, where the food was familiar and plentiful.  This is always a fun meal for us from year to year.

With full bellies we headed off to our hotel. Our luxurious stay for the night was at The Randolf Hotel right in the heart of downtown Oxford.  It is a victorian gothic style hotel built in 1864 with all the modern amenities which allowed for a wonderful night of rest for us weary travelers.
